Celtic v Livingston (Sat Jan 16th 2021)

Updated: Mar 3, 2021

Celtic 0 Livingston 0

The chart on the left shows %possession per 15minute segment and also pass% share in the final third with shots shown (using the right axis).

Only 18% of our passes were in the final 3rd but we did have decent possession at 67%. What does this tell us? It tells us we had possession but couldn't progress that possession into the final 3rd despite the game being 0-0 and us desperately needing 3pts. For me this tells me that Livingston were allowing us possession but controlling where we had it. It also asks questions about fitness given that the end of the first half was similar in the %passing in the final third was less than 10% of passes. We also had our lowest possession in that segment (30-45mins) at 45% possession.

Our best performance in this area was 15-30mins where we had over 50% pass rate in the final 3rd which lead to us having 4 shots.

Livingston had a better xG than us at 1.44 (v 1.3) and the would indicate that they were the most likely of team to win the game.

Livingston's 15 shots and 22 touches in the box would back this up.

Frimpong had 2 shots (1 on target), 2 key passes and 3 touches in the box. Ralston had 2 crosses.

We had 61% possession and McGregor had the most touches at 98. We had 351 passes which was 75% accuracy. Duffy got the highest rating due to 13 aerials won out of 16 attempted and had 8 clearances. My MotM would have been Soro with 92% accuracy and 66 accurate passes.

Rogic played up front as a false 9 with Johnston and Frimpong and while it didn't work I couldn't us for trying this as there were no other options. We could have tried something different during the game though when we saw it wasn't working.

Johnston's touch map showed he dropped far too deep during the game and this didn't help our creation of chances.

Celtic still had 14 players unavailable due to self isolating and longer term injuries; Barkas, Bain, Elhamed, Ajer, Christie, Brown, Elyounoussi, Ntcham, Edouard, Griffiths, Ajeti and Klimala all self isolating and Jullien and Forrest out long term.

Celtic lined up with;

- Hazard

- Ralston, Bitton, Duffy and Laxalt

- Turnbull, Soro and McGregor

- Frimpong, Rogic and Johnston

Ralston came in for Harper (with Frimpong moving up front) and Bitton (back from suspension) came in for Welsh. The formation was changed from 442diamond to 433 with false 9.

Okoflex and Henderson came on as subs.
