Celtic v St Johnstone (Match Preview)



Probabilities for the match are - Celtic 90%, St Johnstone 3% and 7% the draw.


St Johnstone had no game at the weekend as they were already out the league cup after losing to Stenhousemuir, Ayr Utd and Stirling Albion (4-0) in the group stages.

The week before they lost 2-0 away to Ross County and the lined up with the following;

  • 1 Dimitar Mitov

  • 17 Oludare Olufunwa, 18 Sam McClelland, 6 Liam Gordon and 4 Andy Considine

  • 5 Ryan McGowan and 34 Daniel Phillips

  • 22 Matt Smith, 25 Cammy Ballantyne and 11 Graham Carey

  • 7 Stevie May

Ex-Man City player Smith was signed from MK Dons and he joined St Johnstone in the summer along with ex-Chelsea academy player McClelland and ex-Liverpool under 21 player Olufunwa. Also signed in the summer was goalkeeper Mitov who was signed from Cambridge and has been capped by Bulgaria at u17 and u19 levels.


The other 7 players were already at the club last season.


Subs used were centre forward Luke Jephcott who was signed from Swindon and St Johnstone youth players Maksym Kucheriavyi (central midfielder) and Taylor Steven (right midfielder).


Unused subs were goalkeeper Dave Richards (on loan from Crewe), left back Liam Parker, central midfielder Alexander Ferguson and 17 year old midfielder Ben McCrystal.


They only had 7 subs instead of the allowed 9.


In the 18 players was a varied range of youth and experience with 4 players between 30 and 36 and 11 players 23 or under (with 4 of those being under 20).


In the game against Ross County they had 2 changes from the previous week against Hearts with Considine coming in for Tony Gallacher at left back and Smith coming in for Drey Wright in right midfield.

In the game against Ross County best for xG was May 0.13 and best for xA was Carey on 0.12.


Best for xG so far this season is Gordon on 0.52 and Olufunwa on 0.21.


Best for xA so far this season is Carey on 0.34 and Phillips on 0.09.

In the last game against Ross County away they lost 2-0 and conceded 2.59 xG. St Johnstone had 56% possession but only 0.49 xG. The week before against Hearts they had 0.93 xG while Hearts had 1.7.
