Celtic v St Johnstone (Match Stats)

Celtic 0

xG 2.02

St Johnstone 0

xG 0.28

Celtic's xG of 2.02 was not enough to create a goal and was down on the xG of 2.86 for the last home game against St Johnstone (December 2022) in which Celtic won 4-1. That day Celtic's Post Shot xG was 3.75 whereas Celtic's Post Shot xG on Saturday was only 1.93.

Celtic had 19 shots at goal with 4 in the first quarter, 7 in the second, 3 in the third and 5 in the fourth. The lock of shots (and urgency) in that final quarter is a concern.

In the first two games of the season Celtic's passing was up on the corresponding fixture last season however in the last two games it has been down. Total passes in this game was 733. Down from the 820 in the December game. It was also only 84% for accuracy on Saturday while it was 92% in December.

Celtic lined up with;

  • Hart

  • Johnston, Lagerbielke, Scales and Taylor

  • O'Riley, McGregor and Turnbull

  • Maeda, Kyogo and Yang

Four changes from the Kilmarnock game with Scales coming in for the injured Nawrocki, Johnston coming back in after injury for Ralston, Turnbull back in for Holm and Yang starting ahead of Abada.

Ralston, Holm and Abada all dropped to the bench. Maeda kept his starting place but moved wing to the right hand side.

Other than the returning Johnston coming into the squad for the injured Nawrocki the 20 man squad remained the same.

Ralston, Haksabanovic, Abada, Forrest and Bernabei all came on as subs for Johnston, Turnbull, Maeda, Yang and Taylor. Bain, Iwata and Kwon were unused subs as they were last week and Holm was an unused sub this week too.

In Celtic's last home game of the season McGregor made 102 accurate passes and received 100 passes in this game he only made 65 and received 53. In that game he received 16.4% of Celtic's passes and in this game it was only 9.4%.

The biggest combination of passes in this game was Lagerbielke to Scales which was 7.7% of the team's total. Against Aberdeen in that last home game the highest from a central defender was Iwata to Starfelt which was 3.4% of the team's total. The most in that game was Starfelt to McGregor at 4.3%.

Best performers in this game for xG were O'Riley 1.24 and Kyogo 0.20.

Best for xA for Celtic were Johnston 0.41 and McGregor 0.23.

Top goal contributor combined was O'Riley with 1.30
