Rangers v Celtic (Match Stats)

Rangers 0 xG 1.8 Celtic 1 xG 0.95

(Kyogo 45+2)

Celtic were leading the xG battle until the 75th minute when Lammers missed his opportunity. From then on Rangers had some more chances but their finishing was poor. Rangers had a Post Shot xG of 0.57 which was only 32% of the xG. Celtic's Post Shot xG was 0.92 which was 97% of the xG.

Kyogo had a Post Shot xG of 0.27 with his goal from an xG of 0.07.

Rangers 17 shots at goal was the most in a Glasgow Derby since May 2021 however only 3 were on target.

Celtic's passing accuracy was 79% which was below last season's 81% and 85% for the 2 visits to Ibrox. Celtic's 29 clearances were a lot more than last season's 20 and 13 however it was less than the 44 on the 2-1 win at Ibrox in April 2022.

Last season's league games had an average of 1,275 passes in total per Glasgow Derby ranging from 1,243 to 1,297. This game had only 946 in total and at times it looked like both teams were playing in 100 degree heat.

Rangers stood off Celtic in the first half and had a PPDA of 20.1. In the second half the PPDA was 3.8. Celtic's was 10.4 in the game and that was far higher than last season's average of 7.56 for the six derby games. The highest for Celtic last season was 9.52 for the January games at Ibrox.

Celtic lined up with;

  • Hart

  • Johnston, Lagerbielke, Scales and Taylor

  • O'Riley, McGregor and Turnbull

  • Abada, Kyogo and Maeda

Celtic had one change from the St Johnstone game with Abada coming in for Yang.

Kobayashi, Oh and Palma came in to the squad. Kobayashi and Oh back from injury and Palma just signed this week. Forrest, Haksabanovic and Iwata missing out on the squad. Haksabanovic going on loan to Stoke and I'm unaware if Forrest and Iwata were injured.

Similar to last week Ralston and Bernabei came on as subs for Johnston and Taylor. Yang came on for Abada, Oh for Kyogo and Holm came on for Turnbull.

Bain and Kwon were unused subs like last week and the other two unused subs were Kobayahsi and Palma.

Callum McGregor dictated the tempo of this game and he made 14.3% of Celtic's passes which was a lot more than the 12.4% he had in January's game at Ibrox. He received 13% of the team's passes versus 12.4% in January.

Lagerbielke made the most of the team's passes (16.8%) and received the most (13.8%). 4.1% of the team's passes were Lagerbielke to Johnston.

The biggest combination of passes was Scales to Taylor (4.9%). Best performers in this game for Celtic on xG were Kyogo 0.73 and Maeda 0.13 with their shooting accuracy (Post Shot xG versus xG) being 37% and 138%. Best for xA for Celtic were O'Riley 0.14 and Holm 0.06. Top goal contributor combined was Kyogo with the 0.73 xG as he had 0 xA.
