St Johnstone v Celtic (Match Stats)

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

St Johnstone 1 xG 0.29 (Wright 25) Celtic 4 xG 1.91

(Considine OG 13, Kyogo 22, Mooy 38 and Turnbull 90+3)

I mentioned in my preview that St Johnstone have conceded 29% of their goals between 15 and 30 minutes and that we should expect Celtic to be leading after 30 minutes (19/20 was the price for those fancying a bet).

As predicted that indeed was the case and Celtic scored their 2nd goal of the match between the 15 and 30 minute period.

Looking at xG per quarter the 2nd quarter was the most dominant for Celtic and allowed Celtic to go into the break 3-1 up.

Celtic lined up with;

  • Hart

  • Johnston, Carter-Vickers, Starfelt and Taylor

  • Mooy, McGregor and Hatate

  • Jota, Kyogo and Maeda

One change from midweek with Mooy coming in for O'Riley with O'Riley taking Mooy's place on the bench. The rest of the bench was the same as Wednesday's game.

O'Riley, Abada, Turnbull, Oh and Haksabanovic coming on as subs for Hatate, Jota, Mooy, Kyogo and Maeda.

Callum McGregor had 111 passes in the match which was just behind Starfelt's 113 but it was 16% of the team's total which was better than his season average of 13% and double the 8% he had on Wednesday against Livingston. The midfield had 33% of the team's passes which was higher than seasonal average of 30% and a lot higher than against Livingston which was 27%.

Celtic shots at goal were only 12 in this match and that's the 4th lowest of the season with away to Rangers, away to Hearts and the previous away match against St Johnstone the only ones lower at 8, 11 and 11.

Celtic's 171 final third passes were the 4th lowest also with the two games against Rangers and the away match against Hearts lower at 123, 154 and 169.

Similarly the % of the match being played in the final third (at only 25%) was the second lowest of the season with the 21% at Ibrox the only other one that was lower.

Top contributors in this match for Celtic were for xG Kyogo on 0.92, Mooy 0.39, Jota 0.27 and Turnbull on 0.15. Post Shot xG for them being 0.76, 1.07, 0 and 0.39.

For xA the best contributors were Jota 0.41, Mooy 0.14, McGregor 0.11 and Hatate 0.11.
